
Jazmine Sullivan was born and lived within Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Pam Her mother, who is an ex-backup singer at Philadelphia International Records. Her father offered an opportunity to be the curator for the Historic Strawberry Mansion. She along with her family relocated to the historical landmark. In 2005 she graduated from Philadelphia High School for the Creative and Performing Arts with majoring in vocal music. Sullivan started singing as a contralto in the kids' choir, before joining shortly after, she was a part of the adult choir. Sullivan wasn't exposed to secular music at first. "I started singing as a soloist in church, and somebody was urging me to sign up for a gospel recording when I was 11. But I wasn't prepared to go through with it," she says. "Then the time came that McDonald's had a competition for youngsters in the major cities, I got a chance to sing 'Accept What God Gives' on Showtime in the Apollo and the audience responded really well". At the age 13 she sang alongside Stevie Wonder for his grandson's birthday. Sullivan began her contract with Jive Records at the age 15. When she was 15 she signed with Jive Records. She made an whole album at Jive Records, however it wasn't released. Sullivan was eventually removed from the label. There was a close relationship with Missy Elliott and produced some of the songs in her debut album like the huge hit track "Backstabbers" which was produced by Timbaland and composed by Elliott.
